The primary purpose of a brake light is to signal to drivers behind you that you are slowing down or coming to a stop. This function is vital for road safety, as it helps prevent collisions by giving following drivers the necessary warning to react accordingly. When a driver applies the brakes, the brake lights illuminate, alerting others to the change in speed or intent to stop well in advance. This communication is essential for maintaining safe distances and ensuring that traffic moves smoothly without unexpected stops.

The other options, while related to driving safety in some way, do not encapsulate the primary function of brake lights. For example, indicating when turning is typically done using turn signals. Warning of a malfunction in the vehicle usually involves dashboard indicators, and enhancing visibility in poor weather conditions is often aided by headlights and other specialized lighting rather than brake lights specifically.
